Technical Information

The font used for the logo and referenced in the CSS for the menu is called Essays 1743 by John Stracke and based on the typeface used in a 1743 English translation of Montaigne’s Essays. It resembles the font used in the promotional work and cover art of Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle novels. The font is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License and available for download at http://www.thibault.org/fonts/essays/. This site makes extensive use of characters not covered by ISO-8859 or ASCII, hence Unicode (UTF-8) is used as the default encoding. Should you experience any problems, especially with the phonetic (IPA) characters on the home page, make sure that you have a good user agent (i.e. Firefox) and a font with a good coverage of the unicode character range installed (e.g. Doulos SIL Font).
